Shared Values of Collaboration (2024)

Collaborating with Environmental Justice Communities: Reimagining San Francisco collaborates with environmental justice communities most vulnerable to climate change, aiming to equitably share the benefits of nature. Projects address the needs of these communities and deliver tangible economic, health, and environmental improvements, while avoiding negative impacts like displacement.

Going Beyond a Land Acknowledgment: Land acknowledgements are just one step in recognizing the traditions, culture, and history of Native peoples who have long inhabited these lands. Reimagining San Francisco works to address Indigenous erasure by integrating Native history and stories into our projects and supporting and advocating for Indigenous-led stewardship of ancestral lands.

Finding Balance and Understanding: We recognize that everyone shares a commitment to the well-being of both the land and the people of San Francisco. Reimagining San Francisco implements habitat restoration and biodiversity conservation, balanced with community access, recreation, and city-wide infrastructure needs. We prioritize local native plants and acknowledge that there are instances where green spaces are designed for purposes beyond ecological function in which non-native species may be used to meet community needs.

Respect each other: We foster an inclusive, respectful environment by recognizing and valuing diverse perspectives. We commit to non-harmful language and actions, actively addressing oppressive language and its role in systemic oppression. We take personal and collective responsibility for our biases, avoiding language that "others," cancels, or dehumanizes individuals or groups. Ongoing cultural awareness and learning are essential to align with these values.

Acknowledge many ways of being/knowing/doing, many truths: We create spaces for respectful feedback, encouraging learning and growth. We hold each other accountable with care, respecting differing opinions and engaging in constructive debate. We avoid speaking for others. Everyone is a learner, and no one holds all the answers. We practice a growth mindset, recognizing every experience as an opportunity to learn.
